We see it everywhere in the pet industry – in bios, hashtags and captions.
It sounds lovely. Reassuring, even.
But real collaboration isn’t something you say.
It’s something you live.
In this solo episode of The Pet Business Wellbeing Podcast, I wanted to talk honestly about what genuine, heart-led collaboration actually looks like and why behaviour matters far more than branding.
When Collaboration Is Tested, Not Trendy
Without going into detail, I’ve had an experience last year that really made me pause and reflect.
It reminded me that:
- not everyone who talks about community walks the walk
- collaboration is often embraced… until someone feels threatened
- insecurity can show up as exclusion, silence, or control
And here’s the important part:
👉 Someone else’s fear doesn’t define your value.
How we respond – with integrity, clarity and kindness says far more about us than it ever will about them.
Why This Matters for Dog Walkers
Dog walkers are often:
- working alongside trainers, behaviourists, groomers, vets and rescues
- navigating shared spaces and overlapping services
- part of online communities that should feel supportive
When collaboration breaks down, it can leave people feeling:
- excluded
- unseen
- hesitant to show up fully
That’s why it’s so important we talk about what healthy collaboration really looks like.
Five Ways to Approach Collaboration With Confidence & Integrity
1️⃣ Collaboration Starts With Self-Awareness
Before we collaborate well with others, we need to understand ourselves.
Know:
- your values
- your strengths
- what you bring to the table
When you’re grounded in who you are, you’re far less likely to feel threatened and far more open to genuine partnership.
2️⃣ Lead With Generosity, Not Fear
True collaboration comes from an abundance mindset.
There are:
- plenty of clients
- plenty of dogs
- plenty of opportunities
Lifting others up doesn’t diminish you – it builds trust, credibility and connection far faster than any marketing strategy ever could.
3️⃣ Communicate Openly and Honestly
If you want to work with someone – say so.
If something feels unclear – ask.
Most collaboration issues don’t come from conflict.
They come from assumptions.
Clear, respectful communication prevents small insecurities from becoming big divides.
4️⃣ Respect Boundaries (Yours and Theirs)
Healthy collaboration doesn’t mean saying yes to everything.
You’re allowed to protect:
- your time
- your ideas
- your emotional energy
Boundaries aren’t walls – they’re signposts.
They help others understand how to work with you respectfully.
5️⃣ Celebrate Others – Even in the Same Space
One of the strongest signs of confidence is being able to cheer for others who do similar work.
Someone else’s success doesn’t take away from yours.
When we celebrate each other, we create an industry that feels:
- safer
- kinder
- more sustainable
And that energy always comes back around.
Collaboration Is a Way of Being
This is what I want to leave you with:
Collaboration isn’t a marketing phrase.
It’s a way of being.
It’s choosing:
- connection over comparison
- confidence over fear
- integrity over control
We all rise higher when we lift each other up and that’s the kind of pet industry I’ll always choose to be part of.
