Running a pet business can look wonderful from the outside.

Dogs, wagging tails, freedom, doing what you love.

But as many pet professionals know, there is often far more going on behind the scenes.

Emotional labour. Difficult client situations. Compassion fatigue. Constant problem-solving. Trying to support others while remembering to support yourself.

That’s exactly why I was delighted to welcome Melissa McCue-McGrath onto The Pet Business Wellbeing Podcast.

Melissa is an experienced dog trainer, behaviour consultant, author and someone who brings honesty, humour and humanity to our industry.

Our conversation explored everything from writing a book, to burnout, to the fascinating world of dogs detecting invasive species.

The Stories Behind the Industry

Melissa’s new book, Misadventures of the World’s Okayest Dog Trainer, offers a refreshingly honest look at life in dog training.

Not the polished social media version.

The real version.

The awkward moments. The emotional moments. The surprising moments. The lessons no course manual can fully teach.

Because while many people enter this profession for the dogs, they soon realise the human side of the work is just as important.

Communication, relationships, emotions, expectations and sometimes chaos.

It’s one reason so many pet professionals quietly carry more than people realise.

Why More Pet Professionals Should Share Their Story

One thing that stood out strongly in our conversation was the power of storytelling.

Melissa spoke about how writing became reflective and therapeutic.

That resonated deeply with me.

Many pet professionals have experiences, lessons and journeys that could help others feel less alone.

You do not need to write a book tomorrow.

But perhaps there is a blog inside you.
A podcast episode.
A post.
A story worth sharing.

Sometimes your lived experience becomes someone else’s encouragement.

Compassion Fatigue Is Real

This was another important theme we explored.

So many caring professionals give and give until they feel drained yet struggle to recognise it until they are already depleted.

That includes:

  • Dog trainers
  • Dog walkers
  • Groomers
  • Behaviourists
  • Pet sitters
  • Veterinary professionals
  • Anyone in a helping role

When your work revolves around caring, it can be easy to overlook your own needs.

Your wellbeing is not a luxury.

It is part of the business plan.

Dogs Continue to Amaze Us

We also discussed Melissa’s work helping train dogs to detect invasive species, including spotted lanternfly.

It was a brilliant reminder that dogs are capable of extraordinary things when given the opportunity to use their natural skills.

It also highlighted something I believe strongly:

Many dogs labelled “difficult” simply need the right outlet, understanding and support.

Sometimes confidence, purpose and enrichment can change everything.

The Person Behind the Business Matters

This podcast exists because I believe the person behind the business matters just as much as the business itself.

That means talking honestly about:

  • Burnout
  • Boundaries
  • Confidence
  • Growth
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Real life behind the scenes

Melissa brought all of that into this conversation with warmth and authenticity.

Final Thoughts

If you work in the pet industry, I hope this serves as a reminder:

You do not need to carry everything alone.
You are allowed support.
You are allowed rest.
You are allowed to grow in a way that works for you.

And perhaps… you may even have a story worth telling too.
