I remember my life before the Internet.
I remember when we got email.
I remember when we started to find chat rooms.
Then we had Yahoo groups, MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, Twitter.

I made so many friends in that first five years of the Internet.
It was mind blowing to learn that other people liked the same things you did.
I literally took trips to visit people I had never met in person.

You would think that the more people we met, the more we would love the Internet.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case for me.
I’ve met so many unkind people.
I’ve seen so many horrible conversations.
I’ve been publicly attacked in so many groups. I faded into the background. I would only watch. Sometimes I debated if it even made sense to stay on social media at all.
But somehow, I met Nathan. I met him at a conference. We instantly connected. We started working together. I really liked our time together.
And then he invited me to his on boarding process for his new group, Circle +.

In all honesty, I joined the meetings it just to be nice.
I knew that groups weren’t safe.
I knew I had no intentions of ever joining a group.
And I would never pay to join a group. That sounded insane.

But somehow, here I am. I like this group. I like the people I talk to. I don’t feel dumb. I don’t feel ashamed. I don’t feel like someone is going to be mean to me. It really reminds me of the 90s. When we actually were so overjoyed to meet like-minded people that we weren’t going to nitpick or be critical. We just were happy to share space together.
