In the pet care industry, taking time off can feel uncomfortable.
There’s always another client to reply to.
Another rota to tweak.
Another dog who needs support.
So when dog walkers do stop, it’s often only when they’re already exhausted.
In this solo episode of The Pet Business Wellbeing Podcast, I share a personal reflection after taking my first proper break since May 25 and why stepping away reminded me that rest isn’t a luxury for dog walkers, it’s essential.
When You Finally Stop… and Realise How Tired You Were
I didn’t fully appreciate how drained I was until I actually stopped.
That week away gave me:
- proper rest
- sunshine
- zero notifications
- space to breathe instead of constantly responding
And something unexpected happened.
Once my body slowed down, my creativity switched back on.
Ideas flowed. Perspective returned. The mental fog lifted.
It was a powerful reminder that constantly pushing through doesn’t make us more productive, it just makes us more tired.
Rest Re-Ignites Creativity (Especially for Dog Walkers)
Many dog walkers assume creativity only comes from doing more.
But in reality:
- clarity comes from space
- better decisions come from rest
- sustainable growth comes from stepping back
When you’re always in “go mode”, your nervous system never gets a break and neither does your thinking.
Stepping away from the day-to-day whirlwind gives your mind permission to wander… and that’s often where your best ideas live.
Rest Is Not Something You “Earn”
One of the biggest reflections from this episode is this:
👉 Rest isn’t something you earn after burning out. It’s part of running a business well.
Dog walkers are particularly vulnerable to this mindset because:
- the work is physical
- the days are long
- the responsibility is real
- clients rely on you
But a rested dog walker is:
- more patient
- more focused
- more resilient
- better equipped to support dogs and clients
Your future self and your business will always thank you for resting.
You Don’t Need a Holiday to Pause
Taking time off doesn’t have to mean a week away.
It could be:
- a long weekend
- a phone-free afternoon
- a change of routine
- blocking time to do nothing
In the episode, I share one simple suggestion:
Schedule one wellbeing appointment this week and treat it like a client booking.
Non-negotiable. Protected. Yours.
Modelling What Sustainable Business Looks Like
As dog walkers, we don’t just run businesses – we model behaviour.
When we normalise:
- breaks
- boundaries
- self-care
- time away
We give others permission to do the same.
Sustainability isn’t about doing more.
It’s about building a business you actually enjoy being in.
What’s Coming Next on the Podcast
I also share a glimpse of upcoming podcast episodes covering:
- work-life balance and parenting
- the power of support networks
All through the same lens: businesses that support your life, not consume it.
A Gentle Nudge for Dog Walkers
If you haven’t taken a proper break in a while, consider this your permission slip.
Put your cup down.
Refill it.
Then come back stronger.
